Alfio J. Fichera, 96, of Galveston, passed away Wednesday, November 05, 2014, at Mainland Medical Center in Texas City. He was born October 24, 1918 in Apalachicola, FL and served in the US Army during World War II. Alfio married Fanny Foti Fichera and worked in the dressmaking business with his wife’s family for 30 years. He was an avid fisherman and loved to dance and go gambling. He also played cards with his card group. Alfio was a member of the San Giovanni Italian American Association and Sacred Heart Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Rose Fichera; all of his siblings; and his wife, Fanny Fichera.
Alfio is survived by his daughter, Rose Marie Scherer and husband, Joseph; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. His family wishes to extend special thanks to Alfio’s longtime companion, Hallie Bennett, and her family for everything they have done throughout the years.
Alfio’s family will receive visitors beginning at 5:00 pm, Sunday, November 9th, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. A rosary will begin at 6:30 pm.
Funeral Mass will be 10:00 am, Monday, November 10th, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father EJ Stein, OFM, as Celebrant. Burial will be held at Houston National Cemetery at a later date.
Pallbearers will be Buster Fichera, Charlie Fitzgerald, Joe Patane, Michael Billiott, Jeff Billiott, and Sal Arcidiacono.
