To the family of Alice Mikes Maffei--My mother, Ethelda Arnn Van Houten (known to your mom and her other friends as "Scrappy"!) was a good friend of Alice's during their days at St. Mary's. She was a person I heard mentioned often when Mom described her student nurse days. My mother died about 18 months before Alice, and given Mom's packrat ways, it will take me a lifetime to sort out all of her stuff. I found a letter to her from Alice written in 2011, so they did remain in touch. Mom also joined the Army Nurse Corps and was stationed at McCloskey Hospital in Temple, Texas, where my dad (a sergeant, just like your dad, and yes, we heard the same joke!!!) was her patient. They married in 1946 and lived in Michigan for the rest of their lives. I don't know if you will receive this, given the time that has passed, but hopefully you'll see it, and know that your mom was very fondly remembered by one of her fellow classmates. Alice must have been a special lady, because I know that my mom was. The world is poorer without them.

On behalf of the Army Nurse Corps Association, San Antonio, Texas, please accept heartfelt condolences at the recent death of Alice Agnes Maffei. Her service to America's sick and wounded during World War II is worthy of acclaim! It is courageous women like her who helped to secure and sustain this land of the free and home of the brave. The burdens of this life have now been lifted. May she forever enjoy the eternal peace and bounty that prevails in God's heavenly kingdom. I salute a fellow Army Nurse hero at her final parade rest.

Sweet memories of Mrs. Maffei. I think I was in her 2nd surgical tech class, graduating in1980. There I stayed, retiring in 2007. She helped me find the career I was seeking, and was so thankful to her, and that opportunity all those years ago. I still have the miniature bandage scissors she gave at graduation from program! I lost my mom ,June 1st, last year. She was 93, and I miss her everyday
