Anna Elizabeth Mayer Neely, of Galveston, died on October 25, 2017, in Livingston, TX, at the age of 93. Anna was BOI, “born-on-the-island” at Galveston, TX on September 2, 1924, the youngest of three girls of Ernest Mayer, Jr. and Johanna Malsberger Mayer. Anna graduated from Ball High School and the University of Texas. During World War II, she met her future husband, Joseph A. “Joe” Neely, a US Coast Guardsman serving in the Beach Patrol on the Island. Anna and Joe were married after Joe returned from serving in the South Pacific at the end of the war. They were forever together for the next 62 years of marriage. Anna and Joe had one child, Joseph A. Neely, Jr., “Joe” to friends and “Jody” to family. Anna retired from Houston Independent School District, concluding her career teaching business at Sterling High School in 1986. They moved back to Galveston in 1987 and for many years Anna and Joe resided in their waterfront retirement home off Teichman Road.
Anna was preceded in death by her husband, Joe, Sr.; their son, Jody; and her sisters, Beatrice Kidd and Katherine Pucar. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews who will fondly remember and miss her.
Anna’s family will receive visitors beginning at 10:00 am, Friday, October 27, 2017, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will begin at 11:00 am at the funeral home, followed by burial at Galveston Memorial Park in Hitchcock.
