Dr. Anthony J. Cann Jr., 64, passed away Thursday, March 5, 2015 at home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born October 15, 1950, in Clarksburg, West Virginia. He graduated from Fairmont State College with a degree in Biology. At the age of 38, he retired from teaching biology and coaching baseball and golf at Fairmont Senior High School to go to medical school. After graduating from medical school, he began his residency in family medicine at UTMB. He won several awards and was Chief Resident while at UTMB. Being a “family doc” was his passion; he loved practicing medicine. He enjoyed becoming friends with many of his patients, friendships that lasted well after he retired from practicing medicine.
Anthony is preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Nancy Cann; his father, Anthony J. Cann, Sr.; and his brothers, Phillip and Larry Cann.
He is survived by his sons, Brian Cann and wife, Lisa; Anthony Cann and fiancé, Maggie Curtis; and Justin Cann and Hillary; grandchildren, Joseph and Katie Danesi; Marie Cann, Jack Cann, and Hailey Cann; mother, Margaret Cann; mother and father-in law, Mary Kay and Frank Urso; sister, Mary Kay Russell and husband, Harrison; and brother, Jimmy Cann and wife, Bridget; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends.
Anthony’s family will receive visitors beginning at 5:00 pm, Monday, March 9th, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will begin at 6:30 pm, led by Father E. J. Stein. Burial will be held at Beverly Hills Cemetery in Westover, WV on Friday, March 13.
Pallbearers are Troy Haddox, Doug Smith, Josh Morgan, Rick Morgan, Joseph Danesi and Tim Ektefaei.
