Obituary

Barbara Marie Carmignani Pennington, 72, of Galveston, went to be with our Lord on Friday, January 6, 2012, in the comfort of her home surrounded by her family after a 3-year battle with lung cancer.

She was born March 6, 1939, in Galveston, Texas, to Robusto and Lena Carmignani. She graduated from Dominican High School with the Class of 1958 and married the love of her life, F. R. (Ray) Pennington, Jr. in 1960. Barbara worked in her parents’ corner grocery store, Star Grocery, where she became famous for her sandwiches she prepared with love. Her greatest joy was being a loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She enjoyed nothing more than watching her grandchildren play in sporting events and was always there to cheer them on. She was an avid reader and took great pleasure in cooking and baking, often feeding the whole neighborhood. Barbara was a devout Catholic and a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Parish. She was a strong believer in the importance of Catholic education and was proud to have given all her children the privilege of Catholic schooling.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Ray Pennington; daughters, Roxanne Hogan and husband, Robert; and Suzanne Hogan and husband, Michael; sons, Jeff Pennington and wife, Shanna; and Jon Pennington; brother, Dr. Robert Carmignani and wife, Sharon; grandchildren: Sean Hogan, Anna Hogan, Joseph Hogan, Katherine Hogan, Megan Pennington, and Elizabeth Pennington; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.

Barbara’s family will receive visitors beginning at 5:00 pm, Tuesday, January 10th, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home. A rosary will conclude the evening at 7:00 pm.

Funeral Mass will be 11:00 am, Wednesday, January 11th, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with Father Ron Groschen as Celebrant. Burial will follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Sean Hogan, Joseph Hogan, Robert McKenzie, Michael McKenzie, Michael Pennington, Lawrence Hogan Jr., Lawrence Rhew and Willy Gonzalez.

Barbara’s family would like to extend sincere thanks to Hospice Care Team, Inc. and Dr. Angela Shepherd, whose medical expertise and compassionate care allowed them to have 4 more Christmases with their mother, for which they are forever grateful.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to O’Connell College Preparatory School, Trinity Episcopal School, or Hospice Care Team, Inc.

Our sympathies and condolences to the entire Pennington family. Mrs. Pennington was a great MOTHER, and wife. She raised all her kids with the love of a mother and taught her kids to respect others. She is now and angel looking down on the great job she did raising her children.May God bless the Pennington family during this difficult time.
