Benita (Bennie) Svatek McBride peacefully departed this life on Sunday, February 9th, 2014. Benita was born to Jim and Millie Svatek in Shiner, Texas in 1926. Attending nursing school at UTMB, she met and married Dan Mc Bride, and became a lifelong Galveston resident.
She worked at St. Mary’s Hospital as an OB/Gyn nurse for many years, while raising her family. She retired from nursing in 1968, to work with her husband, Dan, at the Rexall Central Drug Store in downtown Galveston, until they both retired in 1988.
Benita devoted her life to her five children, through Sacred Heart Catholic School, Galveston Catholic, Dominican, Kirwin, and O’Connell High School. Once all five graduated from college, she returned to her first love, nursing, at UTMB. Because of failing health, she left nursing at the age of 73.
She is survived by her children, Mike and Connie McBride of Fredericksburg, Susan Voigt of Galveston, Tim and Wendy McBride of Houston, Julie Dyer of Pearland, and Patty and Gary Harmon of Alvin. She has 12 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
Benita’s family will receive visitors beginning at 6:00 pm, Wednesday, February 12th, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home. A rosary will conclude the evening at 7:00 pm.
Funeral service will be 10:00 am, Thursday, February 13th, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home with Deacon John Pistone officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons: Tim Mc Bride, David Voigt, Derek Harmon, Daniel Harmon, and Sean Poteet.
