Betty Genice Raley Helton passed away peacefully December 12, 2020.
Betty grew up in the oil fields of North Cowden, Northwest of Odessa, Texas. She graduated from Odessa High School and attended Odessa College. She worked as the “Weather Girl” at KOSA in Odessa. There she met and married her husband Alfred Earl Helton, Sr. on August 4, 1956. They had two children, Rusty and Catherine. In 1971 they moved to Austin for Al’s work, starting KVUE TV. Betty graduated with highest honors from The University of Texas at Austin with a B.S. in Home Economics. She worked for Austin Independent School District at McCallum High School for over 25 years. Along the way, she received her Master’s degree in Education from Texas State University. Betty was also certified in Child Development and Fashion and she served as Assistant Principal. In 1993 she was chosen by the American Vocational Association as National Teacher of the Year.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Al, and her parents, Anna Louise and Cecil Raley, Jr. She is survived by her son, Rusty and wife Ashlay, her grandchildren Niki and Jacob Helton, daughter Catherine, uncles Troy and Bob Evans and wife Pat, and her brother Robert Raley and wife Cherry.
Her great joy was gardening her beautiful flowers and trees and hiking the Grand Canyon with her dear friend Beth Martin. Betty will be remembered as a positive force for good, a loving mother, a committed educator and wonderful friend.
