Dr. Bobbye Rouse, 85, of Galveston, passed away Saturday, March 16, 2013, at UTMB Hospital. Bobbye was born February 3rd in Fort Worth, Texas. She received her medical degree from The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas in 1959. In 1962, Dr. Rouse moved to Galveston and became the Chief Resident and the Director of Mental Retardation Unit in the Department of Pediatrics. She was an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at UTMB and a Director in the Division of Child Development. Dr. Rouse participated in a collaborative study of metabolic disorders and went to Austin to recommend all newborns receive screening for metabolic disorders. She was also a member of the National and International PKU collaborative studies. In 2004, Dr. Rouse was awarded Professor Emeritus, Department of Pediatrics, Division of Genetics at her retirement.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Luther and Anna Smith; sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Tom Adkins; and close friend, Dot Felis.
She is survived by her sister, Ella Joyce and husband, Gary, of Christoval, TX; nephews and nieces: Greg Adkins and wife, Janice, of Midland; Terry Joyce and wife, Julia, of Honolulu; Anna Naumann and husband, Ricky, of Marble Falls; and Melinda Sebring and husband, Paul, of New Braunfels. She is also survived by four great nieces, one great nephew, and one great great nephew and niece.
Her family extends special love and appreciation to her caregivers: Bobbye Berg, RN, PNP; Norma Caligone; Lacreasia Mack; Donna Gaines; and Sheryl Watson. Dr. Rouse’s family is also very appreciative to all the doctors and nurses of UTMB’s 4th floor ICU and 10th floor, and to TheraCare Home Health for their services.
Gravesides services will be held at 2:00 pm, Tuesday, March 19th, at Greenwood Cemetery in Fort Worth, TX.
