Lifelong Galveston native Diann Edith Elizabeth Schaper, born October 10, 1946, passed away after an extended illness on Monday, June 22, 2015. She was preceded in death by her mother, Norma Tobleman Schaper; and her father, A. C. Schaper. She is survived by her daughter, Lori Ann Diaz; granddaughters, Hannah Diaz and Kimi Diaz; her brother, A. C. “Skippy” Schaper, Jr., and his wife Denise; her sister, Jill Yancey, her husband, Rick Yancey, and their son, Christopher, and his wife, Kelly, and their children, Sadie and Samantha.
Diann was raised on the Schaper dairy on Galveston’s West End. She was a lifelong member of the First Lutheran Church, and she graduated from Ball High School and Galveston College. She had a long career with UTMB as a registered nurse, retiring from there several years ago.
She loved listening to music, particularly big band music, and shopping with her sister. She was a die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan, and always busied herself by cleaning the refrigerator when the Cowboys were not doing well. Some of her favorite memories were touring Europe with her sister, Jill, and visiting Martha’s Vineyard with her friends; and hanging out with the Schaper clan at Ethel Mae’s house. Her favorite book was To Kill a Mockingbird and her social hero was Atticus Finch. She taught her daughter to love reading, especially to read her favorite book.
A memorial service will be held at her favorite restaurant where she often enjoyed a good meal, Landry’s Seafood, on the Seawall. Please join her immediate family anytime between 2:00-5:00 PM on July 12, to share your memories.
Memorials can be sent in her memory to the First Lutheran Church, 2415 Winnie St., Galveston TX, 77550.
