Obituary

Dorothy Ellen Schirmer Gay, 95, of Galveston, passed away Thursday, October 2, 2014, at her residence after a short illness. She was born November 8, 1918, in Galveston, to Ella and Houston Schirmer, Sr. Dorothy graduated as Valedictorian of Ball High School, Class of 1936, where she was a member of the State Championship basketball team. She became an x-ray technician and later a medical technician and worked in Galveston. Dorothy then moved to Gladewater, TX, where she met her husband, Rufus A. Gay. Rufus and Dorothy returned to the island and Dorothy ran the Internal Medicine lab at what became Gulf Coast Medical Group until she was two weeks shy of her 80th birthday. Dorothy was a lifelong member of First Lutheran Church of Galveston.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Robert Gay; sister, Lorraine Topp; and brother, Houston Schirmer.

She is survived by her daughters, Marilyn Sue Chapman and Nancy Trieff; grandchildren, Paige Krekler and husband, Frank, and Zoe Bruner and husband, Marc; great grandchildren, Alden, Adelaide, and Tristram Bruner; numerous nieces and nephews; and her loyal canine and feline companions, Sissy and Beauty.

Dorothy’s family will receive visitors from 5:00 until 7:00 pm, Sunday, October 5th, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be 11:00 am, Monday, October 6th, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home with Rev. Doug Guthier officiating. Private family burial will be held at Galveston Memorial Park in Hitchcock.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church, the Galveston Island Humane Society, or the charity of your choice.
