Obituary

Dr. Edward Leonard Mallia Jr., known to loved ones as Eddie or PawPaw, was called home to Jesus Christ Monday, April 10th, 2017, in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Eddie was born September 26th, 1936, in Galveston Texas. He was a Kirwin High School graduate and was proud to introduce himself as a “BOI,” or someone “born on the island.”

One day in 1955, Barbara VanZandt prayed a novena, asking the Lord to introduce her to a God-fearing man. That afternoon, Barbara and Eddie met. For more than 60 years, they were an example of selfless love for each other and for Jesus Christ.

Eddie graduated from St. Edward’s University and University of Texas Dental School. He served in the Air Force before opening a private dental practice in Galveston, where he made people smile for more than 40 years. There, his love for people and love for God gave rise to a career full of quiet generosity, as he frequently donated dental work to those in need, usually without anyone else’s knowledge.

Eddie was full of life and love. He welcomed anyone and everyone on to dance floors. He enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, often with grandchildren on his lap. He was a force to be reckoned with on the racquetball court; he was known to embarrass younger players with his skills at the Racquet Club in Galveston as well as at Red Lerille’s Health Club in Lafayette. His blue eyes, warm smile, and sharp wit have left a lasting effect on everyone he encountered.

Eddie is survived by his wife, Barbara VanZandt Mallia, and their five children, Mark Mallia, Wayne (Sherry) Mallia, Cindy Spangler, Jimmy Mallia, and Carol (Michael) Doyle. He continues to watch over nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by parents, Edward Sr. and Betty Mallia, as well as his sister and brother, Janie Huvar and Steve Mallia.

Services will be held in Galveston, Texas, where Eddie will be returned to the place he loved most.  Services will be held at St. Patrick’s Church, Wednesday April 12th.  Visitation will follow a 4:00PM Rosary, Mass will begin at 6:00PM.  Pallbearers are Corey Mallia, Jake Doyle, Mike Huvar, Adam Mallia, David Mallia, and Michael Doyle. Honorary pallbearers are David John Roberts, Doug Huvar, and Billy Huvar. Eddie will be laid to rest at Calvary Catholic Cemetery at 10:00 AM Thursday, April 13th. Arrangements are being coordinated by Malloy & Son Funeral Home.

Barbara, A friend from Galveston just text me and said that Eddie past away and that his funeral is today in Galveston. Please be assured that my thoughts and prayers are with you, your children and your family. His parents were always very good friends with my parents, as well as Steve and Bill being close friends from Kindergarten throughout their life. Eddie was always a so very kind and nice to everyone. Again, you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Haydee

Dr. Mallia will be missed by many. There was a period of time when I was young when I was not entirely certain where the Mallia family ended and the Brouillard family began. Many happy memories of those times. May God comfort you all at this time. With love, Bruce Brouillard and family
