The Reverend Frank Thomas Fabj, known for his devotion to Catholic Education and to Our Lady of Guadalupe, passed away on Saturday, January 5, 2019, at the age of 70. Fr. Frank was preceded in death by his loving parents Robert Fabj and Florence Maceo Fabj as well as his brother-in-law Bill Newkirk. He is survived by his loving sister, LeLe Fabj Newkirk as well as his aunt Concetta Maceo Arena and numerous cousins.

Father Frank was born on Galveston Island on September 22, 1948, and was a product of Galveston’s Catholic School System. Fr. Frank’s family and closest childhood friends were keenly aware from an early age of his one and only desire to become a priest.  He realized his dream on May 12, 1984, when he was ordained to the priesthood at Sacred Heart Co-Cathedral in Houston, Texas by Bishop John L. Morkovsky, S.T.D. God blessed many parishes and their parishioners as Fr. Frank was able to serve as a priest for 34 years. He was extremely proud that he was able to lead the congregation of Sacred Heart in Galveston, the church where he grew up and where his family attended. His most recent assignment was serving the community of St. Frances Cabrini, in Houston, Texas. Fr. Frank saw this as a blessing too as his beloved grandmother “Mama”, Katie Maceo who met Mother Cabrini
as a child was a source of inspiration for his religious vocation.

A viewing will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Galveston, Texas this Thursday, January 10, 2019 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. with the Holy Rosary beginning at 6:30 p.m. and led by his lifelong friend Reverend Lee Flores. The funeral Mass will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, January 11, 2019 at Sacred Heart followed by a private family burial. Persons wishing to make donations to their favorite charities on behalf of Fr. Frank are welcomed to do so.

The following quote was taken from the program used during Fr. Frank’s ordination to the priesthood: “The priest is not an angel sent from heaven. He is a man chosen from among men, a member of the church, a Christian. Remaining man and Christian, he begins to speak to you the word of God. This word is not his own. No, he comes to you because God has told him to proclaim God’s word. Perhaps he has not entirely understood it himself. Perhaps he adulterates it. But he believes, and despite his fears, he knows that he must communicate God’s word to you.” And so my dear friends, we thank you for loving Fr. Frank and ask for your continued prayers for his family and for the many people whose hearts he touched.

Words cannot express how saddened I am by your passing. You were always such a huge role model to me which had a lasting impact in my life. Altar serving for you for those 12 years at Sacred Heart taught me more about the purpose life than any other moments in my life. All the masses, baptisms, weddings, last rites, funerals, and every other sacred moment I shared with you will always be a part of my heart and soul for eternity. As my Godfather, you always protected me during my time of need, especially when I experienced such a traumatic event with my family. Your words and campassion gave me strength to continue on and it literally saved my life. I will forever carry all the wonderful memories I shared with you and your loving family with me until we meet again. Holding you and praying for you while you took your last breath was such a blessing to me and I thank God for that final memory you shared with me. I love you Father now and forever. May you rest in peace.

It is incredibly sad that Fr Frank's life ended so soon and it is hard to understand why tragic things like this happen to such good people. (only God knows). I cannot put into words how much I will miss him. I was very fortunate to spend 12 plus years of my life as Fr's Secretary and Parish Administrator at Sacred Heart. During those years we created many memories that I will forever hold dear in my heart. Your memory will live on in all of us forever. Without a doubt Fr. was the most generous and loving person I have ever known, always giving and never asking anything in return. We have an angel in heaven to look after us to protect and guide us thru our life so we can reach our heavenly home called "heaven" Wishing you and your family strength and peace. You are forever in my thoughts and prayers..

So very sorry to hear of Father Frank's passing. He truly did have a commitment to Catholic Education as I can verify that through my own experience. When my eldest daughter was a junior in high school, she was headed down a very dangerous path & needed an extreme change in environment if she were to be successful. At first we attempted to have her relocate near the Dallas area where she would live with relatives & attend a small Christian Academy. She; however, wanted NO part of that. O'Connell High School was FAR beyond our means as far as tuition cost. was Father Frank who encouraged her to apply. He was determined to have her attend & went through every fine detail of how to receive financial assistance for tuition. I'm happy to say, she DID attend & graduate from O'Connell, all because Father Frank cared enough to help. Such dedication!!! Thank you!!!!!!

Fr. Frank's homily on weekdays and Sundays touched many hearts including mine and I could remember most of those homilies even now. Fr. Frank was a good spiritual priest for me and guided me and my family. When I got laid off in March 2016, Fr. Frank advised me to make a promise to Mother Mary that I would help the poor when I get a job. I first went to St. Frances Cabrini Church in May 2007 to attend a Legion of Mary meeting at 300 Building (CCE building). When we first met, Fr. Frank was excited to learn that I am from India. You were so generous and humble to allow the Indian community to hold Holy Mass and Novena on every Tuesday to St. Anthony of Padua since May 26,2009. Fr. Frank helped the Novena group by celebrating Mass on Tuesdays and was the Main Celebrant for the Feast day mass on few occasions. St. Anthony's Novena group is grateful to Fr. Frank and St. Frances Cabrini community for their love and support to the Novena group. On behalf of the group, Fr. Chacko visited Fr. Frank last Wednesday in the hospital and conveyed and assured our prayers. Fr. Chacko missed participation the funeral services since he is away in India. Later, I introduced Fr. Frank to the Syro-Malabar Church,Pearland on October 16,2013 when they were looking for a better facility to hold their Sunday services. Fr. Frank was so generous and allowed them to hold their services at St Frances Cabrini Church and he considered the Syro-Malabar Church, Pearland as part of the St. Frances Cabrini family until they moved to their own property in May 2016. In addition, Fr.Frank allowed the Indian community to hold the Roman Catholic Mass in Malayalam on Sundays in June 2016. Fr.Frank's generosity was overflowing when he allowed the Pasadena Malayalee Association to hold their annual event at the giant Francisca Hall. I offer deepest condolences to the family of Fr. Frank. As says in Psalm 23:4 , Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

It has been a God sent experience to have met Father Frank. My family and I moved to a new community and near a new church back in 2005. Since becoming parishioners at St. Francis Cabrini Church our family has never felt more at home since the arrival of Father Frank. His words, his passion for keeping faith in God's will has made us understand that we are here to listen and do God's plan. Father Frank will be truly missed but never forgotten. My greatest honor was that he allowed me to do an album giving Our Virgin Mother, OurLady of Guadalupe a beautiful serenade in which he allowed us to record at the church and he did the honor of vocalizing a prayer in this album. His voice is powerful and will be cherished always. Until God's calling we will reunite one day. Our condolences and prayers to his family.
