Frederick H. Van Ness, Sr. passed away on December 13, 2017 in Galveston, TX. Fred will be lovingly remembered by his sons Kevin and Vincent, daughter-in-law Celeste, brother Jim, five grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Sandra Van Ness (nee Watts), mother Clementine Van Ness (nee Krueger), father Delbert Van Ness, brother John Van Ness, and son Frederick H. Van Ness, Jr.
Fred grew up on the West end of Galveston Island, where he spent most of his life. He served ten years in the U.S. Army, completing two combat tours in Vietnam. During that time, Fred was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart medals. Following his Army service, he returned to Texas where he worked as a welder and electronics technician. Fred was a big Houston Astros fan. He loved football, fishing, and playing golf.
A celebration of Fred’s life will be held at 1:00 pm, Thursday, December 21, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home, 3028 Broadway, in Galveston, followed by interment with military honors at Galveston Memorial Park Cemetery.
Donations in memory of Fred can be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children or Wounded Warrior Project.
