Obituary

Jake Richard (Ricky) Dodson, Jr., 61, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, July 10, 2015. He attended Galveston public schools, where he was an active member of the Ball High School Band. Ricky was a strong supporter of the Tors. He had season tickets and loved to attend all games, even out of town games, with his lifelong friend, Johnny Lidstone. Rick graduated from Ball High in 1972. After graduating from the University of Houston, he began his professional life as the owner of several businesses. His accounting background led him to a life and career of helping others. Rick was employed by the City of Galveston as an accounting supervisor.

Rick was a very active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. As a lifelong servant in the Lutheran church, he culminated his service by holding the position of church Treasurer.

Ricky was always the life of the party and loved spending time with his nieces and nephews, family gatherings, and time with his friends. He was an active member of the Krewe of Aquarius and could not wait for Mardi Gras every year. His wicked sense of humor kept everyone on their toes, and he often had the last laugh. Uncle Ricky will be greatly missed, as he was so loved by his family and friends.

Ricky was preceded in death by his parents, Lois Catherine and Jake Richard Dodson, Sr.; and his sister, Carolyn Jay Dickman. He is survived by his sister, Lois Elaine Rivaux; nieces, Tania Dagg (John) and Courtney Toops (Buddy); nephews, Rich Rivaux, Benjamin Robert Rivaux (Emily), Richard Allen Dickman, III (Julie), and Ariel Nevarez Rivaux; as well as 6 great nephews and 6 great nieces, along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Rick’s family will receive visitors beginning at 5:00 pm, Tuesday, July 21st, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home. A celebration of Rick’s life will begin at 6:00 pm.

A memorial service will be 4:00 pm, Wednesday, July 22nd, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 39th & Avenue L, with Pastor Alan Taylor officiating.

Memorials may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church, 3920 Avenue L, Galveston, TX 77550, or to The Children’s Center, 2902 Broadway, Galveston, TX 77550.

I met Jake about five years ago going to dinner with a group of friends on Saturday night's. He was a such a fine person. Always smiling and kind to all. Such a loss to those who loved him. He spoke often of visiting his nieces. I'm sure he will be missed.

How many summers I spent with Ricky while staying at Uncle Jay and Aunt Lois' house I can't count. I always gave you a hard time cause you lived on an island an didn't swim. We had great times as kids. A piece of my heart is gone, but Heaven is a brighter place. I can see Grandma and Grandpa Dodson, Uncle Jay and Aunt Lois', Carolyn and my dad welcoming you. Rest easy Ricky. Love you like a brother.
