Joan Slusarchyk, at the age of 81, left us to join her daughter Mary-Alice in the Kingdom of Heaven when stricken with a heart attack on Valentine’s Day, 14 February 2015.
As the loving matriarch of her family, all will cherish their memory of sharing wonderful times coupled with coping with life’s daily challenges. Joan was the second of three sisters born to Raymond and Mary Alice Dingwell in Waterbury, Connecticut. After high school, the family moved to Indialantic, Florida where Joan later raised her three sons and a daughter.
While working in defense electronics during the Cold War, she met her husband George Slusarchyk. After a six-year courtship, they married in 1975 and later relocated to Rockwall, Texas — again in the defense intelligence business. The sons and daughter also migrated to Texas and Oklahoma, and Joan and George were blessed with a granddaughter and three grandsons. More recently, two great-granddaughters made their family appearance in Omaha, Nebraska.
Retirement in Galveston brought Joan and George back to their childhood days of enjoying an oceanfront lifestyle while offering a family vacation getaway.
Joan is preceded in death by her parents; her daughter Mary-Alice; and her older sister Lois. She is survived by George, her husband of nearly 40 years; her sister Sally Nida (Ted) of Trinity FL; her sons Bruce Herndon of Kingwood TX, Eugene Herndon of Moore OK and Rodney Dingwell; granddaughter Audrey Herndon of College Station TX; grandsons Steven Dingwell of Carrollton TX, Kyle Herndon (Trisha) of Bellevue NE, and Adam Dingwell of Dallas TX; great-granddaughters Destiny and Alexis Herndon; and nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at Malloy & Son Funeral Home in Galveston on Sunday,February 22, 2015 from 5-7 pm. Funeral Services are set for 11:00 am Monday, February 23, 2015 at Grace Episcopal Church, 1115 36st Street, Galveston TX.
