Obituary

Joanne Helen Weber, 90, died December 17, 2016 at The Meridian Retirement Community in Galveston, TX. Joanne was born on the island (a proud BOI) on September 15, 1926, the third child of Otto Louis Weber and Janie Christensen Weber.

She lost her mother in 1936, when Joanne was only 9 years old; her sister, Jane Elizabeth Weber died in 1952 at age 31; and her brother Otto Louis (O.L.) Weber, Jr. died in 2004 at age 80. Joanne’s father died in 1970 at age 85. Also deceased are her Godmother, Clara Christensen, and Godfather, Thomas J. Smith, Sr.

Joanne’s father remained a widower, caring for his three children; none of his children ever married. Joanne did not marry; and felt it was her state-in-life to lovingly care for her father and her brother.

Family meant a lot to Joanne; and she cherished and treasured enlarged framed photo taken in 1905 of 38 family members: Dolsons, Christensens and Sudermans. She enjoyed photos of family and friends taken throughout her life.

After graduating from high school, there was an illness in the family and she did not want to leave to use her scholarship to an Ursuline College in New Orleans. She became employed in 1943, during World War II, by Electric Supply Company in the office for 11 years. Then in 1954, she went to work for the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway for about 11 years until the Santa Fe left Galveston. She chose not to transfer to Chicago or to Amarillo. Joanne then worked for American National Insurance Co. in Human Resources until she took early retirement in 1988 at age 62. She gratefully loved all three jobs, her bosses and all those with whom she worked.

She was a past member of Sacred Heart Altar Society, Sacred Heart Women’s Club, Catholic Daughters of America, and Railway Business Women. She was an active member of the Ursuline Alumnae Association.

Joanne was a lifetime member of Sacred Heart Church at whose school she attended until 1936. She continued her education at Ursuline Academy, graduating in 1943.

Joanne did not like to travel, but did enjoy spending weekends at the family’s Crystal Beach property in Bolivar.

The family is grateful to her caregivers, Rosa Mora, Frances Rodriguez and Blanca Romero, who were also special friends. Thanks to the caregivers at The Meridian, including the drivers who provided transportation.

Survivors include many cousins, especially first cousins, Betty Pat Christensen Curran, Mary Clare Christensen Albrecht, Cyrilla Christensen Jones, and Anita Clare Williford. Joanne truly valued the many visits and care given by Sue and Rick Calvin, Irene Wallace, Ellen Sanderson and Bernie Curran.

The family will receive visitors at Sacred Heart Church, 1302 Broadway (Avenue J), in Galveston from 10 to 11 am on Thursday, December 22, 2016 with a rosary beginning at 11 am followed by a funeral mass at 12 noon. Burial will follow at Galveston Memorial Park in Hitchcock.

Pallbearers will be Ray Albrecht, John Armstrong, Eugene Brennan, Dr. Richard Calvin, Bernard A. Curran Jr., Kenneth Jones, Windell Neely, and William Smith. Honorary pallbearers include Leroy Naschke, Jr., Michael Naschke, Derrill Naschke, Hal Neely, John B. Christensen and David Sanderson.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests donations to Sacred Heart Church, in care of Holy Family Parish, 1010 35th Street, Galveston, TX 77550, Ursuline Sisters of the Central Province, 353 S. Sappington, St. Louis, MO. 63122 or charity of your choice.
