John Joseph “Chip” Thiel, 62, passed away on November 17, 2015, after a long illness.

Chip was born on May 10th, 1953, on Galveston Island and was a proud BOI. He was the son of Dr. and Mrs. John Thiel, who preceded him in death in 2005.

Chip was a devout Catholic who attended St. Patrick School and Kirwin High School / O’Connell, graduating in 1971. He received a B.A. in English from the University of Texas at Austin in 1980. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1983 for one tour of duty in Turkey. Upon honorable discharge from the Army, he returned to school and obtained a R.N. degree, graduating in 1990 from San Jacinto College. He then began his nursing career at UTMB in Galveston at TDC hospital, retiring in 2004.

Chip had a love for traveling. Throughout his life, he toured Germany, Spain, China, Portugal, Mexico, and many U.S. National Parks, his favorite being Yellowstone. His constant companion and true love was his cat named Bubba.

He also loved Johnny Cash, often playing his music on his guitar. During his life, he donated to 14 different charities, which was a tribute to his generosity. Prior his death, he was pursuing a degree in Humanities at UHCL, a testament to his love of learning.

Chip is survived by three sisters: Beverley Thiel of Austin, TX; Diane Thiel Bozorgi of Key Biscayne, FL; and Camille Thiel Downes of Galveston, TX and Middletown, DE. He will be missed by his brother, Louis Joseph Thiel, of Webster, TX, and brother-in-law, Dr. Sia Bozorgi, of Key Biscayne, FL. He will be remembered by many nephews and nieces.

Chip’s family will receive visitors beginning at 10:00am, Monday, November 23rd, at St. Patrick Catholic Church. A funeral mass will follow at 12:00pm, led by Father Orrin Halepeska.

The family would like to thank the UTMB medical and surgical teams, as well as the nursing staff, who were all so caring and compassionate during this very difficult time.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made in Chip’s name to the American Diabetes Association (PO Box 11454, Alexandria, VA, 22312) or the National Kidney Foundation (30 East 33rd Street, New York, NY, 10016).
