John Logan Engvall, Sr., born October 9, 1938, passed to a better place where he can finally breathe again on Saturday morning, April 13, 2013. He graduated from Georgetown High School in 1957, where he played quarterback on the football team and also played baseball and ran track. He graduated from University of Texas with a B.S. degree in 1962 in mathematics and later obtained his Masters of Science and Ph.D. from the University of Houston in 1968 and 1972, respectively. He worked at NASA and later for aerospace contractor companies from 1963 through 2001, during the development and expansion of the manned space program. As a kid, he was an avid fisherman and hunter of most things that swam or moved around Georgetown; as a father, he was an avid quail, dove and deer hunter in South Texas. He celebrated his 50th year of marriage to his wife, Marty, last year. Together, they led classes at their church, Sagemont Church, that prepared engaged couples for marriage for the last 15 years of his life, and he was an active member of that church in other capacities, including the youth group, for nearly 30 years. He also enjoyed photography, reading, competitive dancing with wife Marty and making jewelry with rare gems.
He is survived by his wife Marty, daughter Ginny Brown and her husband Jeff, son John Jr. and his wife Christy, and also his four grandsons Logan and Barrett Brown and John III (“Trey”) and Seth Engvall, all of whom were dear blessings whom he enjoyed making laugh. He was known for and will be missed for, among other qualities, his quick wit and ability to speak openly and directly about topics serious and humorous alike.
Services will be held this Tuesday evening, April 16, 2013, at 7pm at Sagemont Church, located at 11300 S. Sam Houston Pkwy E, Houston, Texas; family visitation will precede the service and start at 5pm.
