Obituary

Josefina H. Benton, 85, of Galveston, passed away Monday, September 11, 2017, at her residence. She was born August 24, 1932, in Harbor, Indiana.  During her early years, she held two jobs to support her three daughters.  Josefina later moved to Galveston and worked at UTMB as a seamstress in the laundry department and with environmental services, retiring in 1992.

Josefina enjoyed volunteering at the VFW Post 880 in Galveston. She looked forward to honoring veterans by placing Buddy Poppy Seeds at their gravesites.  Josefina served as a member and Secretary of the VFW Post 880 Sisters of Auxillary, and a member of Sons of Hermann and Queen of Peace Catholic Church.  She also loved supporting Boys Ranch, St. Jude’s, the Shriners and the Red Cross with monetary donations.  Josefina loved to play bingo, lotería, dance, garden, and travel.

Josefina was preceded in death by her parents, Gerardo and Cristina Hernandez; husband, Carl Benton; sisters, Cristina Hernandez, Maria Mancha, and Antonia Zapata; and brothers, Teodoro Hernandez and Francisco Hernandez.

She is survived by her daughters, Cristina H. Benton of Galveston, Irasema R. Diaz de Leon (Otoniel) of League City, and Imelda Mendoza (Rafael, Jr.) of Galveston; sister, Rafaela Jackson of Brownsville; grandchildren: Analilia Guerra, Gerardo Diaz de Leon, Jake Benton (Antonia), Laura Hinton (Shawn), Otoniel Diaz de Leon, Jr., Cristina Mendoza, Rafael Mendoza, III, and Carlos Mendoza; great grandchildren: Anthony Garza, Domonic Diaz de Leon, Ashley Garza, Aaron Garza, Christian Diaz de Leon, Sara Diaz de Leon, Alexi Garza, Matthew Mendoza, Otoniel Diaz de Leon, III, Lauryn Diaz de Leon, Jonathan Diaz de Leon; niece, Leticia Barguiarena (Mike Travis); and numerous other relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be 10:00 am, Thursday, September 14, 2017, at Garza Memorial Funeral Home in Brownsville, Texas. Burial will follow the service at Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens also in Brownsville.

Pallbearers will be Carlos Mendoza, Jake Benton, Aaron Garza, Rafael Mendoza, III, Gerardo Diaz de Leon, and Mike Travis. Honorary pallbearers will be Gerardo Hernandez, Otoniel Diaz de Leon, Jr., and Anthony Garza.
