On June 22nd, Julia Lorraine Daily Lawson, 97, passed away peacefully in her sleep. Born on the Island on December 11, 1914 to Roger T. and Mary Knust Daily, she lived her entire life in Galveston. Known as Lorraine, she graduated from Ball High School and worked for Galveston politician Fred C. Pabst until she married Jewel A. Lawson in 1936. Lorraine was a homemaker for many years and later worked for Kellner & Ayers Real Estate/Insurance, retiring in the early 1990’s. Lorraine loved her family, attending all graduations and weddings no matter how far away. She was a faithful member of Our Lady of Guadalupe and later St. Patrick’s parishes. She enjoyed and contributed to the Wednesday Club, the Elks Club and various other local groups over the years.
Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Roger T. Daily, Jr.; and sister, Margaret Daily. She is survived by son, Robert T. Lawson and his wife, Gayla Hughes of Lakeway, Texas; daughter, Carole Lawson Stanley of Houston; a niece, Diane Daily Baker and husband, Everett; five grandchildren: Robert T. Lawson, Jr. of San Antonio/Denver, CO; Guy M. Lawson and wife, Jill Kruse of Falls Church, VA; Liesl Bowers Massey and husband, Vince of Naperville IL; Brian Bowers and wife, Shannon of Elizabeth, CO; and Brett Bowers and wife, Penni-Lane of Alberta, Canada. Lorraine was the proud great-grandmother to nine children: Lexi, Ayla and Niko Lawson; Autumn and Joseph Massey; Kendall, Lawson, Justin and Madison Bowers; a great-niece Susan Munsen of Houston and several cousins from her Knust family.
After living 69 years on Avenue P in the home her husband built, she moved to the Meridian Retirement Community where she gained a reputation as an avid bridge and game player. Lorraine leaves many friends at the Meridian and in the Galveston area after a full life. Thanks to the many friends, caregivers and physicians, especially the excellent and considerate care of Dr. Robert E. Beach.
Lorraine’s family will receive visitors after 5:00 pm, Thursday, June 28th, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home. A rosary will be held at 6:00 pm.
Graveside service will be 10:30 am, Friday, June 29th, at Galveston Memorial Park in Hitchcock.
A memorial service will be held at 2:30 pm, Friday, June 29th, in the chapel of the Meridian Retirement Community, led by Rev. Ray Pinard.
Lorraine’s grandchildren, Robert T. Lawson, Jr., Guy M. Lawson and wife, Jill Kruse, Brett Bowers and nephew, Everett Baker will serve as pallbearers.
