Katherine Piel, a lifelong Galvestonian, passed away on Saturday, February 11, 2017. She was born September 29, 1933 to Stephen A. Shukanes and Dovie Billington Shukanes, who preceded her in death.
Katherine devoted her life and time to her family as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to all. She lived a very full life and enjoyed bowling, waterskiing, dancing, and entertaining friends and family. Everyone felt welcome and loved when visiting her home.
Katherine is preceded in death by her son, David Louis Piel, Jr.; husband, David Louis Piel; her brother, Stephen A. Shukanes; and sister, Mary Lee Shukanes Donahoe.
She is survived by her son, Michael Andrew Piel and wife, Sarah; daughter, Kimberly Piel Conner and husband, Steven; grandchildren: Austyn Piel and wife, Jenny, Ashley Piel Barcinas and husband, Art, Mary Katherine Piel, Clay Piel and Reagan Conner; great grandchildren: Dalton Piel, Jocelyn Piel, Ethan Piel, Alexander Piel, Trystan Barcinas, and Shayla Barcinas; siblings: Ruth Rogers, James Shukanes, Lennie Falks, June Kainer, and Frank Shukanes; and many cherished nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Katherine’s life will be held on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at Moody Methodist Church beginning with a visitation at 9:00 am followed by a service at 10:30 am. Graveside service will be held immediately after the service at Grace Memorial Cemetery in Hitchcock, Texas.
Katherine’s children would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the loving staff of Regent Care Center – League City and the many friends and family who provided comfort and care to Katherine.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Texas Elks Grants for Special Children (texaselkscamp.org) or the charity of your choice.
Pallbearers will be Lane Craft, Landon Craft, Chris Curran, Marr Lonabaugh, Trent Raschke, Jimmy Shukanes, and George Van Etten. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Ansell, Terry Moore, Frank Purjet, and Scott Tinsley.
