Lilla Marie McCutchen, 92, of Galveston, passed away Friday, March 16, 2018, at her residence. She was born November 1, 1925, and attended St. Patrick’s School, graduating from Dominican High. Lilla married US Marine, Olen J. McCutchen, in 1944. She worked at the City Health Department and UTMB.
Lilla and Mac always enjoyed taking their children out for recreation, but never traveled with just their two children. Friends were always included, even on trips to East Texas. Lilla took care of her nephew, Rick; they were always close. Her grandsons, Sean and Ian, spent every summer as children in Galveston and have many happy memories. Ian and his wife, Jennifer, and their children, Connor and Sarah Margaret, visited every year. They especially recall the trip Lilla and Mac made to Mississippi when they lived there and the fun Connor had with his toy, Scooby-Doo.
Lilla was preceded in death by her husband, Olen J. McCutchen; daughter, Diane McCutchen; parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Ricketts; sisters, Maxine Ricketts, Audrey Ricketts, and Bernice Lane and husband, George; nephews, Dennis and Darrell Lane; niece, Diana Lane; and brother-in-law, Dennis J. Whelton, Jr.
She is survived by her son, OIen J. McCutchen, Jr. and wife, Gisella; grandsons, Sean McCutchen and Ian McCutchen and wife, Jennifer; great grandchildren, Connor McCutchen and Sara Margaret McCutchen; sister, Gloria Whelton; step grandchildren: Karen Harrington, Joseph Harrington and wife, Myra, Lisa Dunbar and husband, Greg; and many nieces and nephews.
Lilla’s family will receive visitors beginning at 1:30 pm, Thursday, March 22, at St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica. Funeral mass will begin at 2:30 pm at St. Mary’s, with burial following the service at Grace Memorial Park in Hitchcock.
The family would like to express thanks to Michael Amburn, Eucharistic Minister, for faithfully bringing Holy Communion every Sunday, and also sincere thanks to Galveston EMS and Galveston police for their efforts on Lilla’s last day.
