Born in Acitrezza, Sicily on February 20, 1930, Maria immigrated to the United States with her family. She graduated from Dominican High School in Galveston. On April 8, 1961, she married Vincent B. Mazzara and resided in Galveston. She was a devout Catholic and a parishioner of St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica for over 50 years. There she shared her beautiful voice in the St. Mary’s church choir for decades. She worked at St. Mary’s Hospital at the front information desk, where her sweet disposition and kindness was a friendly welcome to patients and their families. She was devoted to raising her three children. She enjoyed cooking her delicious Italian dishes for her children and their friends. She was committed to instilling the Catholic faith to her children. She and her family participated in the St. John the Baptist feast day event each year. This is a tradition from Italy to Galveston of honoring the patron saint of her hometown (Acitrezza).
She is preceded in death by her husband Vincent B. Mazzara and her parents Grazia and Sebastiano Valastro and her sister Venera Valastro. She is survived by her daughter Giannina Mazzara of Houston, son Ben Mazzara of Beaumont and daughter and son-in-law Grace Ann and Michael Thomas of Springfield, Illinois and her three grandchildren, Christina, Michael Jr. and David Vincent Thomas of Springfield, Illinois. She is also survived by her brother Alfio Valastro and wife Rita, her sister Lucia Fichera all of Galveston, and sister-in-law Mary Fiorilla of Boca Raton, Florida and numerous nieces, nephews and godchildren.
The family wishes to express their thanks to the staff, who bonded with Maria like family, at Calder Woods Buckner Senior Living Community for their care and support over the last 4 years. Also, a special thank you to devoted friends Assunta (Tina) Esposito, Sybil Allen and Wanda Simar at Calder Woods.
