Obituary

Marjorie (Margie) Alice Darney Macklin, 87, of Galveston, passed away Monday, January 9, 2017, at her residence with family by her side. She was born and raised in Galveston, attending St. Patrick’s School and Ursuline Academy. Margie married the love of her life, Leroy Richard Macklin, Jr., at St. Patrick Catholic Church on May 1, 1950. She volunteered at St. Patrick’s School while her children were students there from 1964 to 1977 as a room mother, bazaar and cafeteria volunteer, and substitute teacher. She was hired as a full-time Catechist/Liturgist at St. Patrick’s School and served in this position teaching grades Kindergarten through 6th grade from 1977 until 1986. During this time, she prepared students for weekly and Holy Day masses, First Communion, Reconciliation, Graduation, and Christmas Pageants. She also chaired Bazaar booths for St. Patrick’s School and parish festivals.

In 1986, upon consolidation of Catholic schools in Galveston, Margie was hired as a Catechist/Liturgist at Galveston Catholic School which later became Holy Family Catholic School. During this time, she served grades two through eight as their liturgy coordinator, Eucharistic minister, and sacristan of their Ursuline Chapel. Margie also served as booth chairman for the school bazaar and director of the nativity pageant. She loved involving children in the living rosary, the May crowning of Our Blessed Mother Mary, the stations of the cross, and All Saints Day mass, where the children dressed as their Patron or favorite saint. Margie helped students prepare to become altar servers, readers, ushers, and choir members. With Margie’s guidance, students contributed groceries to the Jesse Tree and the St. Vincent de Paul Society to help the needy in Galveston; as well as contributing to the Holy Childhood Mission Association which helps children around the world.

In 2001, Margie was the first recipient of the Mary Broussard Award for Service in Catholic Education. In 2012, she completed her 37th year of service to Catholic education.

Margie was preceded in death by her parents, Bernard and Margaret Darney; husband of 65 years, Leroy Richard Macklin; and sisters, Mary Ellen Darney Kuhl, Patricia Ann Darney Plowman, and Clara Kay Darney Wallstein.
