Maxine Ray Mullen, 79, of Galveston, passed away Monday, May 31, 2010, at Mainland Center Hospital.
Maxine was born April 14, 1931, in Kemp, Texas. She attended Galveston public schools and was a proud Ball High graduate class of 1948. Later that year, she married John D. “Buddy” Mullen. Together they had four children. Maxine was a true entrepreneur who founded several businesses on the island, including Oleander Greeter Service and Maxine’s Travel. She was a real people person who never met a stranger. She not only opened her home and heart to family and friends, but often opened her home to many others who were in need of a helping hand. On Friday’s, she could be found at Sonny’s having lunch with her dear friends, “The Yo-Yo’s.” However, Maxine’s true passion in life was her active interest and involvement in the lives of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, and her parents George and Lee Ray. Survivors include son, Danny Mullen and wife Susan, of Houston, Texas; daughter, Dyann Polzin and husband Robin; son, George Mullen; and daughter, Mary Lee Maxwell and husband Harry, all of Galveston, Texas; seven grandchildren: Kristen McMackin and husband Brian; Leslie Odom and husband Mark; Jay Mullen; Douglas Polzin and wife Lana; Hailey Polzin; and Stephen and Stephanie Maxwell. Maxine is also survived by five great grandchildren: Ty and Tayler Polzin, Will and Lauren McMackin, and Charlie Odom. She is also survived by her special cousin Teresa Reupert and husband Fred and Aunt Wilma Ray Hansen.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 4, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Ray Pinard officiating. Burial will follow the service at Galveston Memorial Park in Hitchcock, TX.
The family will receive visitors from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m., Thursday, June 3, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Douglas Polzin, Stephen Maxwell, Jay Mullen, Noah Rice, Brian McMackin, and Mark Odom. Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Ford, Wendell Ray, Bob Ray and Max Wilson.
The family would like to thank Dr. Mary Jo Godinich and all of the staff at Sandcastle Dialysis Center. A special thanks to her caregivers Connie, Jeani, and Jolen for their dedication and continued support during her final days.
