Mercedes Jenkins Suarez passed peacefully from this life with her husband and daughter by her side on February 11, 2017. Mercedes was born on June 4, 1950 in Cárdenas, Cuba. At age 11, she emigrated to the United States with her brother and sisters. They spent several months in orphanages and foster homes until they were reunited with their parents in Laurel, Mississippi, where life-long friends, the Asmar family, helped them settle. Later they moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Mercedes attended Louisiana State University, where she met the love of her life, Felipe Suarez. They were married in 1969, and blessed with their daughter Patricia in 1971. Ultimately, she and Felipe settled in Houston/Galveston, where they have resided for the last 35 years. She graduated from the University of Houston with a BS in Political Science.
Mercedes had a career as an underwriter in the insurance industry for 30 years. She had a number of other business interests as well, including real estate, decorating, and investing. She loved new experiences and adventures, and traveled all over the world with her family and friends. She was passionate about her family and friends and about helping those in need. Mercedes was a devoted Catholic who enjoyed providing support for causes in impoverished countries and helping those in need here at home.
Mercedes is preceded in death by her parents, Eduardo Jenkins and Mercedes Jenkins. She is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, Felipe, her daughter Patricia Suarez, son-in-law, Kevin Davis, and granddaughter, Ana Cristina Davis, brother Eduardo Jenkins and wife Lynda, sisters Cristina Fowler and husband George, Victoria Castellanos and husband Francisco, Carmen Williams, sister-in-law Patricia Alvarez and husband Jose, brothers-in-law Ignacio and wife Marta, Jaime and wife Carmen, and a number of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Mercedes’ family will receive visitors from 9:00 until 11:00 am, Thursday, February 16, 2017, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home, 3028 Broadway, Galveston, TX. Funeral Mass will follow at 11:15 am at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 1420 31st Street, on the corner of 31st Street and Avenue N in Galveston. After mass there will be a celebration of Mercedes’ life with a luncheon at St Patrick’s Catholic Church Life Center at 34th and Broadway, Galveston.
Pallbearers will be Paul Jenkins, Carlos Suarez, Gilberto Vargas Garcia, George Fowler IV, Andres de la Puente, and Christopher Jenkins.
Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Holy Family Parish of Galveston.
