Miguel “Mike” Hurtado took his final journey on March 7, 2011. Born in Ariequipa, Peru on September 24, 1926, to Andres and Anita Chavez Hurtado, Mike is preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Magdalena. Miguel was an incredible person, full of life and gusto. His life’s journey took him to many exotic and impoverished places. He had an interesting and accomplished life. His motto was, “If he can do it, why not you?” If Miguel enjoyed doing something, he would always strive to do his best. This was something he reminded his grandchildren about. Miguel was self-educated by his love of books and music. He had an incredible passion for his heritage. He took pleasure in cooking and enjoyed eating a fine meal. Soccer above all else was his favorite sport, although he enjoyed watching his grandchildren participate in any sport. Miguel was proud of all of them and their unique qualities. He was employed in a variety of careers throughout his life. He was a master electrician for Lykes Lines until his retirement.
Miguel is survived by his 3 children: Mark Hurtado and wife, Martha; Anita Robb and husband, Marty; and Maria Wheeler and husband, Charles; grandchildren: Ricky and Chris Hurtado, Ana and Adam Robb, Cheryl, John, James, and Kyle Wheeler; and great grandchildren: Desmond, Connor, Pierson, and Hendrix.
Mike was considered by all the family as “The Great Teacher,” and no one was ever too old to learn. He will never be forgotten for he lives on in our hearts and souls and in our many cherished memories. His family would like to thank all our friends and family for their many thoughts and prayers during this time. A private celebration of Mike’s life has already been held by his family. “Chao.”
