Nonie Marie Willis, 100, of Galveston, passed away Wednesday, April 9, 2014, at her son’s home in Glen Rose, Texas. She was born January 8, 1914, in Magnet, TX. Nonie worked as a kindergarten teacher at Wichlep School for many years and was always very active in her community. She was a charter member of Daughters of the Nile, serving as Queen in 1956. Nonie was also a 50 year member and past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star. She worked with the Rainbow Girls for over 40 years and was an active PTA member while her children were growing up. Nonie was also a very active member of Central United Methodist Church. The central focus for much of her life, however, was her volunteer efforts at Shriners Burns Hospital. She began volunteering there in 1962 and did not retire until 2013. Nonie was the recipient of the Galveston Daily News Unsung Hero Award for her efforts at the hospital.
Nonie was preceded in death by her husband, Reuel Adriel Willis; son, Rudy Carl Willis; two sisters and one brother. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Jo Ann Willis; son, Jerry R. Willis and wife, Nancy; niece, Susie Martin; grandchildren: William Willis, Jan O’Neal and husband, Michael, Leigh Anne Bedrich, Jerry Carl Willis and wife, Shelly, Wayne Carl Willis, and Robert Willis and wife, Tracey; nine great grandchildren, Katie Duke and husband Brandon, Jordan O’Neal, James Bedrich, Matthew Willis, Emily Willis, Shane O’Neal, William Bedrich, John Willis, and Stephen Willis; and numerous other relatives and friends.
Nonie’s family will receive visitors from 5:00 until 7:00 pm, Sunday, April 13th, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home.
Funeral service will be 2:00 pm, Monday, April 14th, at the funeral home with burial following at Galveston Memorial Park in Hitchcock.
Pallbearers will be Nonie’s great grandsons.
