Salvatore John Arcidiacono, 58, of Galveston, passed away Friday, February 25, 2011, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston.
Sal’s family will receive visitors beginning at 5:00 pm, Monday, February 28th, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. A rosary will be held at 6:30 pm.
Funeral Mass will be 10:00 am, Tuesday, March 1st, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with entombment to follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
Sal was born March 4, 1952, in Galveston, Texas, the first generation of his family to be born in the United States. He attended Sacred Heart School and graduated from O’Connell High School in 1971. Sal was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Church, where he was a Eucharistic minister, served on the Parish Council, and taught Baptismal classes for many years. He was a 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus #787, and a Past Faithful Navigator 4th Degree Knights of Columbus of the Msgr. Kirwin Assembly in Galveston. Sal had an accomplished career with the US Army Corps of Engineers for 37 years and would have retired as the Deputy Chief of the Real Estate Division. He started his career working on surveys in 1973 and transferred to the real estate division in 1977. Sal was co-founder and past president of the San Giovanni Italian American Association, where he co-spearheaded the restoration of the Italian Vault at Calvary Catholic Cemetery. He was also a member of the original Tarantella Folklore Dance Group. Sal had a love of cooking, painting hot rods, woodworking and carpentry, music, and most of all, his beloved family.
He was preceded in death by his father, Alfio Arcidiacono. Sal is survived by his wife of 32 years, Delma Arcidiacono; son, Sal Arcidiacono; and daughter, Josie Arcidiacono; mother, Josephine Arcidiacono; brothers, Nunzio Arcidiacono and wife, Silvana; and Alfio Arcidiacono and wife, Kimberly; nephews, Alfio and Anthony Arcidiacono; nieces, Joann Burke and husband, Matt; Isabella Arcidiacono; great nephew, Liam Burke; mother-in-law, Hallie Bennett and companion, Alfio Fichera; sisters-in-law, Margaret Walters and husband, Steve; Linda Langford and husband, Ivan; brother-in-law, Douglas Bennett and wife, Renee; and numerous nieces and nephews on his wife’s side of the family; and numerous relatives in Sicily, Italy.
Pallbearers will be Anthony Arcidiacono, Alfio Arcidiacono, Anthony Tropea, Sebastian Tropea, Frankie Tropea, Daniel “Bubba” Haut, Doug Bennett, and Ivan Langford.
Honorary pallbearers will be Sammy Arcidiacono, Randolph Richardson, Richard Harrison, Orlando Rosas, Eric Willmore, Vinh Nguyen, Alfio A. Tropea, Sammy Arcidiacono, and Matt Burke.
