Sam George Stathakos, 84, of Galveston, passed away Friday, August 17, 2012. He was born December 3, 1927, in Galveston, Texas, graduated from Ball High School in 1945, and attended the University of Houston. Sam served in the US Navy from 1946 to 1947 and then later began his career with the Galveston Wharves where he worked for over 25 years, retiring in 1986. Sam was a longtime member of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church and an avid coin and stamp collector. In recent years, he enjoyed playing pool, dancing, watching old western movies, and going out to eat.
Sam was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lee Stathakos; parents, George S. and Aggelike Andrianopoulos Stathakos; and stepmother, Aggelike Stathakos.
He is survived by his son, Sam G. Stathakos, Jr. (Candy Russell); daughter, Stephanie Stathakos (Dale Lee); grandchildren: Stewart Garrett Stathakos and wife, Katherine, and Zachary Russell Stathakos; great grandsons, Cayden Stewart Stathakos, Carson Sage Stathakos, and Cooper Seeley Stathakos; brothers, Jimmie Stathakos and wife, Voula; and Johnny Stathakos and wife, Donna; sisters-in-law, Elaine Helm and Jean Unbehagen and husband, O.C.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Sam’s family will receive visitors beginning at 5:00 pm, Monday, August 20th, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home. A Trisagion will begin at 7:00 pm, led by Father Serge Veselinovich.
Funeral service will be 10:00 am, Tuesday, August 21st, at the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church with burial to follow at Galveston’s Greek Orthodox Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Robert Donoghue, Michael Unbehagen, Travis Lee, Stuart Lee, Clint Cavazos, and Justin Rekoff. Honorary pallbearers will be Augie Molis, Bob Grice, and T. J. “Boomer” Marinelli.
Sam’s family wishes to express their gratitude to Sam’s caregiver, Cynthia Molis; the staff of Bayou Pines Care Center, and the staff of the Institute for Living.
