Susan Doherty Allex, loving wife of John Allex and mother of Daniel Allex, passed away on January 23, 2013, at home with her family. Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut on August 26, 1952, she was the daughter of Robert and Katherine Doherty.
Sue graduated from Notre Dame High School in Bridgeport. She received a college degree in Sociology/Social Work from Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven, Connecticut in 1974. Upon graduation she became a Volunteer In Service To America (VISTA) and worked at St. Vincent’s House in Galveston. There she grew to love the weather and the clients and colleagues with whom she worked. She developed close life-long friends during that time. After co-owning Bert’s Turf Restaurant for two years, she later worked for Hospice of Galveston County, and then worked as a service coordinator and case manager at Gulf Coast MHMR for more than twenty years.
Sue was diagnosed with cancer in January of 2010. She underwent treatment and received medical care and social services from the Hospice Care Team and medical staff at UTMB. She and her family are thankful to the many very special caretakers who comforted as well as treated her.
Along with her husband and son, Sue is survived by her sister, Martha (Paul) Lindblad of Connecticut, and her in-laws David (Carolyn) Allex and Josephine (Henry) Smith and several nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind a step-daughter Courtney (Ju) Tan and their daughter Sienna. She will be missed by her beloved friends: Cathy Savino, Mary Ellen Hass, Sharon and Bryan Hicks, Kathy and Pat Penrose, Lin and Holly Johnson and Dominga Mares.
Susan’s family will receive visitors beginning at 10:30 am, Saturday, January 26th, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home. A memorial service will begin at 12:00 Noon on Saturday at the funeral home. Private burial will be held at a later date.
