Thomas J. Marinelli, affectionately known as “Boomer,” age 88, of Galveston, passed away Wednesday, August 6, 2014. Boomer was a longtime resident of Galveston, attended St. Mary’s Catholic School, graduated from Kirwin High School, and attended The University of Texas at Austin on one of the school’s first football scholarships. Boomer served in the US Army during World War II, and after his service he returned to Galveston and worked as a shrimper for Grasso & Son and then for Tony Matijevich Flooring Company. As a close friend of the Maceo and Fertitta families, Boomer had many treasured memories of working at the Balinese Room and The Turf. The majority of Boomer’s career was spent with the ILA Local #1665 Clerk & Checkers Union, where he served for 42 years.
In his free time and during his retirement years, Boomer enjoyed playing golf with his buddies and going for coffee each morning with longtime friend of over 50 years, Reese “Shadetree” Nickerson. He could also be found each afternoon at his favorite hangout, Steve’s Warehouse Tires. Boomer also enjoyed making memories with his nieces and nephews and in more recent years, his great great nieces and nephews: Kaylyn, Erial, Brooke, Tripp, and Aidan. Boomer was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus #787.
Boomer was preceded in death by his parents, Vincent and Mary Marinelli; sisters, Josephine Godinich, Yolanda Daulong, Rose Marinelli, and Camilla Mulkey; his brothers, Joseph, Vincent, Felix, Albert, Edward, and Nicholas Marinelli; niece, Myrtis Daulong Carr; nephews, John, Vincent, and Jerome Godinich; and brothers-in-law, John Godinich, Ernest Daulong, and John Mulkey.
He is survived by his nephew, Thomas J. (Bo) Godinich, Sr. and wife, Pamela; nephew, Alby Godinich and wife, June; nephew, Joe Godinich and wife, Patricia; niece, Sister Josephine Marie Godinich; sisters-in-law, Margaret, Ursula, Vicky, and Loretta Marinelli; numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews; and great great nieces and nephews; and many close friends including Kevin Healy, Marc and Mason Healy, Reese “Shadetree” Nickerson, Cathy Martini Arellano, Mary and Marissa Streck, Steve “Smokey” Eggleston, Adaulph Toche, Sr. (Biloxi, MS), Rosemary Poretto, and Joetta Pettaway.
Boomer’s family will receive visitors beginning at 5:00 pm, Friday, August 8th, at St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica. A vigil and rosary service will begin at 6:00 pm, led by Deacon Sam Dell’Olio.
Funeral Mass will begin at 2:00 pm, Saturday, August 9th, at St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica with Father E. J. Stein, OFM, as Celebrant. Burial will follow the service at Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Thomas John (TJ) Godinich, Jr., John Joseph (Jay) Cromie, Mason Michael Healy, Marc Michael Healy, David Jay Godinich, and Douglas Theodore Godinich. Honorary pallbearers will be Michael Martini, Chance Martini, Thomas John (Tripp) Godinich, III, and Aidan Hunter Godinich.
Boomer’s family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to everyone at AMED Healthcare Group and AMED Community Hospice, especially his nurses: Tramica Jones, Karen Carlson, Robin Brister, Sue Lorinicre, and Christina Beaty; and his caseworker, Ranay Danek. They would also like to thank The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and all departments there for their great care of Boomer, especially his doctor, Dr. Jaffer Ajani and staff. They gave Boomer 4 ½ bonus years of life, which his family is eternally grateful for. Additionally, the family would like to extend their thanks to Boomer’s primary care physician, Dr. Lindsay Sonstein and staff.
