Vincent Garza, Sr., 90, of Galveston, passed peacefully in his home on Wednesday, February 7, 2018, surrounded by his family. He was born in Lockhart, TX on August 17, 1927 to Ricardo and Sabas (Sarah) Garza. He grew up with four siblings: Gus, Aurora, Magdalena (Molly) and Esperanza (Hope). Mr. Garza was the last surviving member of his family.
Mr. Garza has made his home in Galveston since 1939. After moving here, he married Gloria Alcala who sadly died giving birth to their daughter, Gloria.
Later in his life, he proudly served in the National Guard achieving the rank of Sergeant. He was later drafted into the US Army and stationed in Alaska during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged as a Corporal and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 880 in Galveston.
While working as at UTMB, Mr. Garza met Andrea Gonzales in 1950. They were soon married. To that marriage was born their daughter, Carmen and son, Vincent, Jr. Vincent and Andrea were married 61 years until her death in 2014.
Mr. Garza spent his career as an electrician. He belonged to the IBEW electrical local for 63 years and spent many years working at UTMB and our local refineries.
Mr. Garza was preceded in death by his parents; his granddaughter, Jennifer Hernandez; and the aforementioned siblings. He is survived by his children, Gloria Garza Hernandez (Ruben Castillo), Carmen Garza Ryan (Steven Tinney), Vincent, Jr. (Doris Jones); his grandchildren: Erin Hernandez, Heather (Steven) Herrera, Kyle Ryan, Vincent Garza III; and one great grandson, Desmond Hernandez.
The family will receive visitors from 5-8 pm on Thursday, February 15, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home, 3028 Broadway in Galveston, with a rosary at 6:30 pm. A funeral mass will be held on Friday, February 16, at 10 am at St Patrick Catholic Church, 1010 35th St in Galveston. Entombment will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Galveston.
Pallbearers will be Gus Hernandez Jr., Bobby Garza, Roland Dablo, Rudy Hernandez, Thomas Muir and Gilbert Muir. Honorary pallbearers will be Vincent Garza III and Kyle Ryan.
